My Latest Musical Obsession
No, it’s not the newest tall, tan, and toned pretty boy. It’s none other than Chris Stapleton, the latest country artist to rise from being virtually unknown to the spotlight of fame. The country music community has been following Stapleton since his CMA performance with Justin Timberlake brought him into the spotlight. If you haven’t heard of him by now, you should.
Stapleton gained his presence in the industry as a songwriter, writing well known hits such as Kenny Chesney's "Never Wanted Nothing More" and "Drink a Beer," recorded by Luke Bryan. He even has ties to popular music, with Adele recording his song "If It Hadn't Been for Love." Stapleton was involved with a bluegrass band, The SteelDrivers, followed by a band he founded, The Jompson Brothers. He signed his solo record deal with Mercury Nashville in 2013, but it wasn't until recently that he gained great popularity. Stapleton may have Justin Timberlake to thank for this sudden recognition, as it seems that his popularity took off after a viral performance at the CMA Awards in November. The two sang George Jones' "Tennessee Whiskey" and "Drink You Away," a song written by Stapleton and recorded by Timberlake. That night, Stapleton took home both Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year for his debut solo album Traveller, though seemingly unknown to most. Since his "Cinderella story" win, Stapleton sold out the rest of his tour dates, added a third night to his upcoming weekend stint at the Ryman Auditorium, and was featured on Saturday Night Live.
Stapleton is a refreshing shift from all of the bro country and pop country songs that are overtaking the radio airwaves. He strips his music back down to the roots of country music, three chords and the truth. You can catch Chris Stapleton this Monday, February 15th at the Grammy awards where he
boasts four nominations including Album of the Year and Best Country Album.
